Unit Special Waste Management has the responsibility to administer and implement the Used Oil Program and Discarded Tires. It focuses on the regulated community awareness about the importance of reuse and recycling special waste and to inform citizens about various aspects that serve the programs.

The waste included in the Regulations are: batteries, pesticides, and thermostats. Recently the Environmental Protection Agency designated the lamp tubes fluorescent as universal waste (EPA designation of June 6, 1999). The University of Puerto Rico at Humacao Campus has a collection program for these wastes.

The Mayagüez Campus has many activities that can pose a challenge in terms of proper management, personal safety and possible impacts to the environment.
